To be human is to experience both joy and struggle, happiness and suffering. Often, we are ruled by the struggles and suffering. When we struggle with our emotions, relationships, self-worth, or meaning in our lives, this is all normal; there is nothing inherently wrong with us.

Yet, we long to be free from old wounds, hurts, traumas, and disappointments.

The good news is that healing from these experiences is possible…

Workshop: How we Suffer Part 2 - When we Don’t Want What we Have - Resisting

We are all looking to be happy, content, and fulfilled - and these states are everyone’s birthright. But we often feel anger, fear, and pain. We push away or avoid what we don’t like or want to face. This often backfires, and what hurts just hurts more or goes underground only to show up again. There is a saying: What you resist, persists. Mindfulness offers ways to work with what is aversive, so we learn to live with such things with greater ease. This is part two of a two-part series. You can take any one or both parts. The workshop will include some meditation, presentation, discussion, and writing. No meditation experience necessary.

Saturday November 20, 2021, 10:00am-noon EST. On Zoom. Fee: $35. Sliding scale available. Email: liz@lizkinchen.com to register by Nov 19.

Note: This workshop is postponed to a later date.

Workshop: How we Suffer Part 1 - When we Want what we Don’t Have - Craving

We are all looking to be happy, content, and fulfilled - and these states are everyone’s birthright. But we often feel just the opposite - sad, dissatisfied, and disappointed. The root cause comes when we cling onto good things and then they end, or we crave for something we don’t have that we want. Both clinging and craving cause us to suffer – to feel sad, dissatisfied, and disappointed. But there is another way! Mindfulness, with its two wings of compassion and wisdom, offers freedom from clinging and craving, and brings more ease with life as it is. This is part one of a two-part series. You can take any one or both parts. The workshop will include some meditation, presentation, discussion, and writing. No meditation experience necessary.

Saturday November 13, 2021, 10:00am-noon EST. On zoom. Fee: $35. Sliding scale available. Email: liz@lizkinchen.com to register by Nov 11.

Note: This workshop is postponed to a later date.

Workshop: Cultivating a Loving Heart in Challenging Times

Workshop: Cultivating a Loving Heart in Challenging Times

Conditions around us continue to carry uncertainty and stress – covid is not contained and the public discourse is far from calm, just to name a couple sources of anxiety. When we feel frustrated, angry, or despairing, we can learn to see with eyes of the heart, and we realize that we are interconnected. As humans, we are actually more alike than we are different, even when we come in very different packaging. Remembering this is calming and restores hope and confidence. Living from a loving heart feels good because it aligns us with the best in ourselves. This not only helps us but also those around us. In this two-hour workshop, we’ll explore ways to cultivate a loving heart even in the midst of uncertainty and strife. The workshop will include some meditation, presentation, discussion, and writing. No meditation experience necessary.

Saturday October 30, 2021, 10:00am-noon EST. On Zoom. Fee: $35. Sliding scale available.

Workshop: Emerging Mindfully from the Pandemic

In this two-hour workshop we’ll explore who and how we want to be as we re-emerge from the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic. Life has been stressful and so many things have changed. This is a unique opportunity to examine what we want to do differently now – what to keep, what to let go of, what to introduce. We’ll talk about our highest intention for our lives; finding what we most value in life as a guide for all our actions and decisions. We’ll explore how we choose to spend our time, our resources, and ways to nurture ourselves and those we love. This workshop will primarily focus on us as individuals, with some thought for how we might contribute to creating the society in which we most want to live.

Saturday June 19, 10:00am – 12:00pm EDT. On Zoom. Fee $35. Sliding scale is available. To register, email: liz@lizkinchen.com by June 16.

Workshop - The Power of Deep Listening

Workshop - The Power of Deep Listening

We listen to people all the time. But do we really give our full attention to others when they speak? How much do we miss and what is the cost of that? Often we are preparing our response or finding ways to defend ourselves or our views. Mindful listening is a skill we can cultivate, and it can significantly improve our relationships. Listening deeply to someone is a gift and feeling heard is healing.

This two-hour workshop will explore what deep listening is, what interferes with it, how to cultivate it, and how it benefits our lives. We will explore inner listening and how it is essential for effective listening to others. Saturday, April 24, 2021 11am - 1pm EDT. Fee $35. Sliding scale available.

To register, email Liz at liz@lizkinchen.com no later than April 23.

Workshop - Working with Limiting Beliefs & Our Inner Critic

Workshop - Working with Limiting Beliefs & Our Inner Critic

How often do we listen to that voice in our head that tells us we cannot do something, that we aren’t good enough, that we aren’t deserving, or that something is wrong with us - our inner critic? We all have this voice to some degree; it’s human nature. However, when these messages become our core beliefs, they rob us of our true identity. The good news is, we do not have to be controlled by these limiting thoughts. We can learn to work with these beliefs, better understand them, and develop a healthier relationship to such messages when they arise. We can even quiet them down. Practicing mindfulness can help us recognize thoughts that are real, but not true – freeing us from their limitations on us. This workshop will be held on zoom, on Saturday February 20, from 10:30am to 12:30pm ET. Fee is $35. To register email me: liz@lizkinchen.com

This is a rescheduled date and time from the previous date of January 23. Registration is open until February 19, 2021.

Uncertainty is always with us. Yet in these days of the ongoing pandemic, disparities, unrest, loss, and instability, uncertainty can feel particularly overwhelming. We’ll explore the anxiety, loss of control, and impermanence felt in uncertainty. We’ll also discover inner & outer resources, and how compassion can lead to greater freedom and resilience. This 5-week class is open to new and experienced meditators, and will be held over zoom. We will meet weekly on Fridays, February 19 to March 19, 2021 from 12:00-1:15pm. Fee is $130. Class - Living with Our Differences

These days the voices of disagreement are particularly loud and discordant. How do we honor our differences without hurting each other? How do we live with each other, listen, learn and even love? This class will explore how making others ‘unreal’, ‘bad’, and ‘wrong’ perpetuates harm. We’ll look to the teachings of compassion, reconciliation, deep listening and wise speech to help us understand how to live together in greater harmony– even with our differences. This 5-week class is open to new and experienced meditators, and will be held over zoom. We will meet weekly on Fridays, January 8 to February 5, 2021 from 12:00-1:15pm. Fee is $130. Workshop - Working with Anxiety

Workshop - Working with Anxiety

Feeling anxious and fearful is something all humans experience, to one degree or another. It can be, by its very nature, very uncomfortable and unwanted. Sometimes it is debilitating. This workshop will address the underlying causes of fear and anxiety, and suggest some methods for greeting these challenging feelings when they arise, and holding them with more ease. This is not a psychotherapeutic session, nor does it address deep-seated PTSD. But it will offer ways of reframing and working with the anxiety that holds us back in life and erodes our sense of goodness and well-being. Especially during these uncertain and precarious times in which we find ourselves, addressing the fears and anxieties we carry every day is more important than ever. This two-hour workshop will include presentation, interaction, writing, and a short break at the mid-way point, in a safe and supportive environment. Fee: $30 per person, and is on zoom. For more information, or to register, email me at: liz@lizkinchen.com

Pain is such a part of life, there really is no escaping it. It can be a formidable visitor, whether it stays for a long or short time. Mindfulness practice isn’t a cure for physical pain, but it does offer some ways of working with it that many people find helpful. We’ll explore the ancient expression: “Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional”. Whether you are currently experiencing acute or chronic pain or not, this workshop will offer some tools for working with it when it calls. This two-hour workshop will include presentation, interaction, writing, and a short break at the mid-way point, in a safe and supportive environment. Fee: $35 per person, and is on zoom. Workshop on Gratitude, Generosity, and Joy

Workshop on Gratitude, Generosity, and Joy

This trio of attitudes toward life are truly intertwined; one leading to the next in a cycle of ever-deepening strength. When we gain a toe-hold of any one of them – when we see the good around us and within us, when our hearts open to it, and when we embrace and express that goodness – we invite in greater fullness of life. We develop the resilience to greet the difficulties life inevitably brings with more equanimity and grace. And we positively impact those around us, just by being ourselves. This workshop will focus on ways to tap into this trio of goodness and water those seeds within us. This two-hour workshop will include presentation, interaction, writing, and a short break at the mid-way point, in a safe and supportive environment. Fee: $35 per person, and is on zoom. “I truly recognize the importance of being connected every week. It helps carry me that practice through the week. I recognize the importance of this practice in my daily life, and having the time to meet as a community is really invaluable.”

“You’ve created a pocket of safety, warmth, community, and self-nurturing during a really challenging time.”

“The self-awareness I’ve gotten in these past several weeks is amazing, when we’re in this pandemic and spending so much time with ourselves - it’s so helpful.”

-Students in Topics in Mindfulness class

We may try meditation looking for peace of mind, and think that we aren’t doing it right when we experience the turmoil of our thoughts and feelings. But we don’t need to force our minds to be quiet – meditation means just being present with our minds as they are. True calmness comes when we are at ease with whatever we experience, whether our minds are quiet or busy, peaceful or restless, tense or relaxed.
